When focusing feels harder than it should
If your child struggles to stay focused, finish assignments, manage transitions, or slow down long enough to complete everyday tasks, you may find yourself searching for answers.
You might have tried new routines, visual schedules, rewards, reminders, school supports, or different ways of approaching homework.
And you may still be wondering: Is there another way to support my child's brain and well-being?
At Serene Mind Neuro + Wellness in Tampa, Florida, we believe children deserve to be approached with curiosity rather than the assumption that they simply need to try harder.
Neurofeedback is one approach some families explore when learning about brain wellness. Before deciding whether it might be appropriate for your child, it helps to understand what neurofeedback is, what research tells us, and what questions to ask.
What is neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a broad term for approaches that use information about brain activity to provide feedback. In many traditional forms, sensors measure electrical activity through electroencephalography, or EEG, and a computer provides visual or auditory feedback intended to help a person learn to influence targeted brain activity.
Different neurofeedback systems use different methods, protocols, session structures, and feedback processes. That distinction matters.
Neurofeedback is not one single treatment, and research on one method cannot automatically be applied to every other method.
LENS Neurofeedback, which we offer in South Tampa, is a passive, technology-based approach. It differs from traditional neurofeedback in how feedback is delivered and in the amount of active participation expected during a session.
Families considering any neurofeedback approach should ask which method is being used and what evidence supports that specific approach for their child's needs.
Why do parents explore neurofeedback for ADHD?
Children with ADHD may experience challenges involving attention, impulsivity, activity level, organization, and executive functioning. These experiences can affect homework, relationships, routines, and a child's confidence.
Parents often want to understand every available option. Neurofeedback sometimes enters that conversation because it focuses on brain activity rather than relying solely on verbal instruction or behavior-based strategies.
However, the research requires careful interpretation.
A systematic review and meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry examined 38 randomized clinical trials involving 2,472 participants. Overall, the authors did not find meaningful group-level benefits for neurofeedback as a stand-alone ADHD treatment when using probably blinded assessments. Some analyses of specific established protocols showed small effects on selected outcomes, but the findings did not support treating neurofeedback as a proven stand-alone solution for ADHD. Read the research.
This is important information for parents. It does not mean that every child will have the same experience, but it does mean that claims about guaranteed improvements in attention or ADHD symptoms are not justified.
It is also important to distinguish that research on traditional EEG neurofeedback protocols does not establish the effectiveness of LENS for ADHD.
What if my child struggles with focus but doesn't have an ADHD diagnosis?
Attention difficulties can have many contributing factors.
A child might have difficulty concentrating when they are tired, anxious, overwhelmed, experiencing sensory challenges, struggling academically, adjusting to change, or dealing with other health or developmental concerns.
Sometimes a child can focus well on a preferred activity but struggle with tasks that require sustained effort. That difference can be confusing for parents and educators.
Difficulty focusing alone does not establish an ADHD diagnosis. When attention concerns affect school, home life, or relationships, a pediatrician or qualified clinician can help explore possible explanations and appropriate supports.
At Serene Mind Neuro + Wellness, we encourage families to consider the bigger picture rather than viewing every challenge as a problem that needs one particular intervention.
What does a LENS Neurofeedback session involve?
LENS is designed as a passive neurofeedback approach. During a session, the person generally sits comfortably while the provider follows the system's protocol.
Active concentration, controlling a game, or consciously producing a particular response is not required in the same way it is in many traditional neurofeedback protocols.
For some children and parents, the passive format is worth learning about. But a session being passive does not establish that the approach is effective for a particular symptom or diagnosis.
Before beginning, ask the provider to explain the process in age-appropriate language, how the session will be monitored, what responses to watch for, and how progress will be evaluated.
Questions parents should ask before choosing neurofeedback
Consider asking:
Which specific neurofeedback method do you use?
What research supports this method for my child's particular concerns?
What outcomes are realistic, and what remains uncertain?
How will we determine whether the approach is helping?
What happens if my child experiences discomfort or a change in symptoms?
Should we coordinate with my child's pediatrician, therapist, or school team?
What other evidence-based supports should we consider?
A thoughtful provider should welcome these questions. You should not feel pressured to commit to a package or discontinue other care.
Supporting the whole child
A child's attention and behavior are part of a larger story. Sleep, learning differences, sensory experiences, family stress, developmental needs, and emotional well-being may all be relevant.
Depending on the child's circumstances, useful supports might include school accommodations, parent guidance, behavioral interventions, psychotherapy, medical evaluation, or other individualized services.
Neurofeedback should not replace appropriate evaluation or established care simply because it offers a different approach.
At Serene Mind Neuro + Wellness, our whole-person philosophy means approaching children with care, curiosity, and respect for their individual needs. We want parents to feel informed—not overwhelmed—and children to feel supported rather than viewed as problems to fix.

Frequently asked questions
Can neurofeedback help children with ADHD?
Research on neurofeedback for ADHD is mixed and depends on the method and outcomes measured. A major meta-analysis did not support neurofeedback as a stand-alone ADHD treatment overall. Research findings for traditional protocols do not establish that LENS treats ADHD.
Is LENS Neurofeedback the same as traditional neurofeedback?
No. LENS is a passive approach with a different feedback process. Traditional neurofeedback often involves active feedback intended to help someone learn to influence targeted brain activity.
Does my child need an ADHD diagnosis to explore LENS?
A diagnosis is not necessarily required to ask about a wellness service. However, persistent attention difficulties should be evaluated appropriately, and a wellness service should not substitute for a clinical assessment.
Is neurofeedback a replacement for medication or therapy?
No. Families should not stop or change prescribed treatment without consulting the prescribing professional. Neurofeedback should not replace appropriate medical, psychological, educational, or behavioral support.
